Product recalls – information for businesses

You may need to undertake a product recall if a product you sell has safety concerns, falls short of a safety standard, or has caused injuries or near misses.

    A product recall is any corrective action taken to remedy a product safety issue that's identified after a product has been manufactured.

  • Compulsory product recalls

    A compulsory product recall can be issued if a business does not take satisfactory action to voluntarily recall an unsafe product.

  • When to recall a product

    A product recall may be required if a product might cause injury to any person, or contravene an unsafe goods notice or prescribed product safety standard.

  • Announcing a product recall

    You should publish a recall notice and advertise the recall to everyone who may be affected by the unsafe product.

    You must notify the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment when you're recalling a product.
