The Hazard!
The Ceramic Centre of the gauze mat has been reinforced with asbestos (Tremolite) that can release when cracked or worn.
Exposure to asbestos can result in asbestos related diseases.
What to do...
Schools with affected gauze mats should dispose of any potentially affected mats carefully and safely (wearing a P2 mask and disposable gloves).
Where schools are not comfortable handling the identified product or if it is fraying/cracking, schools may wish to organise an asbestos removal contractor.
Delta Education has contacted all affected schools.
